<\/p>\nI couldn\u2019t refer to authors\u2019 rules on effective writing without mentioning my favourite writer and his perspective on what makes great writing. Ernest Hemingway wrote a lot about writing.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a few rules from the Master on what it takes to write well.<\/p>\n

Joanna Young of the blog The Confident Writing Coach<\/em> catalogued 27 gems from Hemingway on the art of writing.<\/p>\n Here Is Young’s list of Hemingway’s advice to writers:<\/p>\n 1 Start with the simplest things<\/p>\n 2 Boil it down<\/p>\n 3 Know what to leave out<\/p>\n 4 Write the tip of the ice-berg, leave the rest under the water<\/p>\n 5 Watch what happens today<\/p>\n 6 Write what you see<\/p>\n 7 Listen completely<\/p>\n 8 Write when there is something you know, and not before<\/p>\n 9 Look at words as if seeing them for the first time<\/p>\n 10 Use the most conventional punctuation you can<\/p>\n 11 Ditch the dictionary<\/p>\n 12 Distrust adjectives<\/p>\n 13 Learn to write a simple declarative sentence<\/p>\n 14 Tell a story in six words<\/p>\n 15 Write poetry into prose<\/p>\n 16 Read everything so you know what you need to beat<\/p>\n 17 Don\u2019t try to beat Shakespeare<\/p>\n 18 Accept that writing is something you can never do as well as it can be done<\/p>\n 19 Go fishing in summer<\/p>\n 20 Don\u2019t drink when you\u2019re writing<\/p>\n 21 Finish what you start<\/p>\n 22 Don\u2019t worry. You\u2019ve written before and you will write again<\/p>\n 23 Forget posterity.
