{"id":556,"date":"2010-01-05T17:25:52","date_gmt":"2010-01-05T21:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bygeorgejournal.ca\/?p=556"},"modified":"2010-01-05T17:28:11","modified_gmt":"2010-01-05T21:28:11","slug":"our-big-government-more-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bygeorgejournal.ca\/?p=556","title":{"rendered":"Our Big Government = More Taxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">In one of its year-end reviews, <em>The Financial Post<\/em> wrote of the emergence of a new generation of\u00a0North Americans \u2013 Generation T, where T stands for tax.\u00a0Paul Vieira of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\"><em>The Post<\/em> explains: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">This group can be described as young Americans, maybe aged 16 to 30, stuck with forking over higher taxes to pay off the debt legislators built up in the years leading up to the great recession, and then allowed to swell substantially in a bid to save the economy from disaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">The American members of Generation T are likely to be hit with taxes their parents were lucky enough to avoid. Among the types they will get quite acquainted with is the VAT, or value-added tax. Think Canada&#8217;s GST on a U.S. scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">So, the scenario is such that debt will drive taxes: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">A rebound in the global economy is set to kick off the beginning of the next decade. But this return to growth will be accompanied by a surge of another sort &#8212; in the amount you, the taxpayer, are about to pay to government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 11pt;\">The great global recession exacerbated the state of budget balances in much of the developed world.
