In the upcoming days, one of baseball’s greatest short stops and celebrated New York Yankee will be retiring from the game. In recognition of what this man means to the game of baseball, there has been two magnificent commercials created, capturing magic of Yankee Captain Derek Jeter and his love affair with New Yorkers. One shows the respect he has garnered in the sport: Re2pect. The other is a moving send off to a player who means everything to the City of New York: I did it my way.

To honour the occasion of his retirement this weekend, the By George Journal has collected a few comments made by Derek Jeter over the course of his career, as well as quotes about this talented ball player and tremendous person.

Derek Jeter:

  • There may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do – and I believe that.
  • I love it when people doubt me. It makes me work harder to prove them wrong.
  • The last thing you want to do is finish playing or doing anything and wish you would have worked harder.
  • Your image isn’t your character. Character is what you are as a person.
  • My office is at Yankee stadium. Yes, dreams do come true.
  • If you’re going to win games, you’re going to have to come up with the big hits. That’s the bottom line.
We just want to win. That’s the bottom line. I think a lot of times people may become content with one championship or a little bit of success, but we don’t really reflect on what we’ve done in the past. We focus on the present.
  • In my opinion, I’ve had the greatest job in the world. I got a chance to be the shortstop for the New York Yankees, and there’s only one of those.
  • I’ve loved what I’ve done, I love what I do, but more importantly I love doing it for you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you [Yankee fans] very much.
  • Fans — Yankee fans in particular — pay attention. It means something to them. They push you. They’ve pushed me. They’re hard, they’re tough, but I think they’ve helped shape who I am. I wanted to have the opportunity to thank them. I don’t think I can truly thank them enough.
  • God, I hope I wear this jersey forever.

Quotes about Derek Jeter:

  • I love his work ethic. He has a great attitude. He has the qualities that separate superstars from everyday people, and a lot of it is attributable to his great family background. – Basketball Legend Michael Jordan
  • He plays this game the right way, every single day. Never takes a day off. Every at-bat is the same. He never gives one away. – Andy Pettitte, New York Yankee pitcher
  • He’s turned it around again. You’re seeing it again. The guy never stops fighting and believing in himself. Obviously, it’s an attitude that’s infectious. It’s an attitude that you want in your players. – Yankees manager Joe Girardi
  • He never changes. Never. First inning to ninth, Spring Training to World Series. He’s the same. He doesn’t mess with his stance or anything. He never tinkers, never changes. – Don Mattingly, former New York Yankee Captain
  • You really don’t know how good he is—you don’t know all the things he does—until you see him on an everyday basis. – Gary Sheffield, Yankee teammate

  • He’s unbelievable. If he‘s not the full package, I haven’t seen one. – Stump Merrill, former Yankee Manager
  • He gets better every year, that’s what’s remarkable about him. Some guys are good and stay good. Some guys are good and get better. He reminds me of Kareem. Hubie Brown said that Kareem worked at the beginning of every season to improve some facet of his game. It’s that way with the best, whatever the profession. That’s the way this kid is. – Ed Bradley on 60 Minutes
  • I’m trying to think who the best Yankee shortstop I’ve ever seen is, and I keep coming back to this kid. – Phil Rizzuto, former Yankee and legendary player
  • As great as Derek has been…he’s always done it with grace, always with a smile, and he’s always done it with personality. I think people can relate to it, and he’s a true winner. – Paul O’Neill, Yankee teammate
